I chose this class because I want to explore diverse literary traditions and understand how different cultural narratives shape the American experience. Arab American literature is a field I have not deeply explored before, but I recognize how important it is in broadening perspectives on identity, immigration, and cultural integration. Through this course, I hope to gain a better understanding of Arab American history, the struggles and triumphs of the community, and how Arab American literature serves as a bridge between cultures. Additionally, I want to be able to analyze literature that deals with themes of displacement, assimilation, and resistance. One of my primary goals in this course is to become familiar with key Arab American authors and their works. I want to understand how historical events, such as early 20th-century immigration waves, post-9/11 discrimination, and contemporary global conflicts, have influenced Arab American writing. I also hope to explore how Arab American literature intersects with broader themes in American literature and how it challenges dominant narratives about race, identity, and belonging. Regarding my knowledge of the Arab American community and things that I learned from my Arab friends, I am aware that it is diverse, consisting of people from various backgrounds, including Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian, Egyptian, and Iraqi descent, among others. Many Arab Americans have faced issues of racial profiling, political marginalization, and cultural misrepresentation in the media. At the same time, they have contributed significantly to American society in fields like literature, science, politics, and the arts. I am eager to learn more about their experiences from their perspectives rather than through stereotypical portrayals. I have not read any books by Arab authors, but I am excited to start exploring their works. I look forward to discovering new perspectives and voices that will help me better understand Arab American experiences and contributions to literature. This course provides a great opportunity to engage with stories and histories I have not yet encountered.
